Book Club Discusses The Autobiography of My Mother
Dominican University’s Book Club will discuss Jamaica Kincaid’s novel The Autobiography of My Mother on Thursday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 002 of the Rebecca Crown Library, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.Set on the West Indies island of Dominica, The Autobiography of My Mother traces the evolution of Xuela Claudette Richardson, born to a woman who died in childbirth and raised without love. Growing up without a mother, Xuela remains determined never to bare children of her own. Over the course of her life, she explores the mysteries of her hybrid cultural origins and the tropical ferment of her native land. Related in Kincaid’s distinctive musical prose, the novel describes Xuela’s search for identity as well as her country’s post-colonial struggle to survive.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
