Theatre Arts Department Presents "Getting Out"

Dominican University presents a theatre arts lab production of Marsha Norman’s riveting play Getting Out on Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26 at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, February 27 at 3:00 p.m. in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Norman’s first play, Getting Out was drawn from her experiences working with disturbed adolescents at Kentucky’s Central State Hospital. The play revolves around Arlene, a young woman who is returning home after serving an eight-year prison sentence for manslaughter and depicts the fears and temptations she faces as she tries to start her life anew. Just as Arlene must negotiate escalating conflicts with her icy mother and menacing ex-boyfriend, she must also come to terms with the rage and pain that imprisoned her long before her first day in jail.

Getting Out, which received the American Theatre Critics Citation as the best new play in 1977, is a hard-hitting, thought-provoking work of social commentary. To explore some of the issues presented in the play, the university will host a free panel discussion on Thursday, February 24 led by experts in sociology, criminal psychology and the penal system. The discussion will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium.

Tickets for this production are $15. For more information about the play or the panel discussion, please call the box office at (708) 524-6942.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
