Jim Ryan To Speak At Dominican Commencement

Former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan will address graduates of Dominican University during commencement exercises at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 8, in the university’s Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Born in Chicago and raised in the suburb of Villa Park, Jim Ryan has had a distinguished legal career for over 30 years, earning such honors as Lawyer of the Year from the DuPage County Bar Association in 1997 and the Special Distinction Award by the Illinois Department of Public Aid in 1994. He graduated from Benedictine University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and received his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Ryan served as a prosecutor in the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office from 1971 to 1974 before being named First Assistant State’s Attorney, a position he held until 1976. He was elected DuPage County State’s Attorney in 1984 and was re-elected by overwhelming margins in 1988 and 1992. In 1994 he was elected Attorney General of Illinois.

During his tenure as attorney general, Ryan focused his attentions on developing and expediting nationally recognized initiatives on domestic violence prevention, increasing the collection of unpaid child support, attacking the sale and use of illegal drugs, and providing for advocacy centers to meet the needs of abused children.

Ryan has been honored for his work by the Illinois Coalition Against Tobacco, The Better Business Bureau in Chicago, and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Crime Prevention Committee. In addition, Ryan received the Defender of Justice Award by the National Conference on Christians and Jews.
