Stars experience growing pains
One week after the program’s first three-game win streak since November of 1998, the Stars dropped back to back games to Judson College and Saint Mary’s University.
On Sunday, the Stars came up on the losing end of a 61-50 seesaw battle with the Saint Mary’s Cardinals. After jumping out to a six-point lead in the game’s first eight minutes, the Stars fell behind 33-21 at the end of the first half.
The Stars battled to within in two-points in the last five minutes on three-point field goal by Bernie Talian. However, the Cardinals countered with the next four points to reclaim a 52-46 lead with 3:32 remaining. Binyamin Jones pulled the Stars to within four on a dunk but the Cardinals responded with a three to pull out to a 55-48 lead and then converted six of eight free throws in the game’s final minute to secure the 11-point victory.
Talian paced the Stars’ offense with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field, including three three-point field goals. Jones chipped in 10 points while Mike Haiduc scored 12 points and logged 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
Just 24 hours earlier, the Stars fell to the Judson College Eagles in a thrilling 73-72 game that featured six lead changes and seven ties. Judson claimed the game’s final lead at the foul line with just 20 seconds remaining after tying the score at 72-72 on a three-pointer just 19 seconds earlier.
The Stars were led by freshman Kenny Goldthwaite’s 13 points. Ocie Peet scored 12 points and had a team-high 7 rebounds while Talian chipped in 11 points as the Stars dropped their first game in over a week.
The pair of losses dropped the Stars to 4-5 overall and do not play again until December 30 at the University of La Verne in California.
