Stars Wrap up Season on the Courts
The Dominican University women’s tennis program capped off a successful 2004 campaign with a fourth place finish at the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) Championships on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2.Laura Grabowski highlighted the Stars’ singles play, capturing the conference title at the number one singles position. Grabowski, who entered the tournament as the fourth seed, knocked off her opponents from Aurora University, Benedictine University and Clarke College en route to the title.
The Stars’ Bozana Durman and Sarah Schoo each finished second at the number three and number four singles positions respectively. Schoo fell to her opponent from Clarke College in the championship round, who was the only opponent to defeat Schoo in singles play.
Michelle Albrecht, Eileen Shanahan and Molly Nolan all took home fourth-place finishes in singles play, competing in the number two, number five and number six flights respectively.
In doubles competition, Grabowski and Albrecht teamed together to finish third in the number one doubles flight, while the team of Schoo and Shanahan and the team of Nolan and Sarah Plovanich each finished fourth in the number two and three doubles competitions.
In total, the Stars finished with an 8-4 overall record and went 3-3 in NIIC regular season play under first-year head coach Bob Greenwald.
