Stars Defeat Conference Foe
The Dominican University Stars volleyball team hosted Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) and neighborhood rival Concordia University (IL) on Tuesday night and emerged with a 3-0 victory. The Stars got off to a slow start in front of a rowdy crowd at the Igini Sports Forum. However, after an injury to senior Becky Knotek broke the action, the Stars rallied to come from behind to take game one 30-27. The Stars then carried the momentum into game two, disposing of the Cougars 30-15. The Stars found themselves trailing 6-0 in game three but battled back and gained the lead for good at 25-24 before winning the game 30-25.
“Our team woke up when Becky went down,” said head coach Meghan Maxwell. “The girls saw the effort Becky was giving when she got hurt and it made everyone pick up their intensity. That’s what you want out of your seniors—to lead by example.”
Haley Ostrander paced the Stars’ attack with 11 kills and a .276 hitting percentage. Kate Zintak and Melanie Hach added nine and eight kills respectively and Hach led the Stars’ defense with 18 digs.
The Stars then hosted Judson College on Thursday and fell to the Lady Eagles 3-0 with Knotek still out of the line-up. The Stars took early leads in each of the first two games, but fell 30-27 in both games before dropping the third game of the match 30-23.
Hach led the Stars on both offense and defense with 14 kills and 14 digs. Zintak turned in another solid performance with nine kills and four total blocks in the losing effort.
The Stars will look for their fourth conference victory on Tuesday night when they travel to Dubuque, IA, to take on the Clarke College Crusaders before returning home to host Transylvania University for a 2:00 p.m. match on Sunday.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
