Stars’ Defense Flawless in Last Four Matches
The Dominican University men’s soccer team has not surrendered a goal in the last 400 minutes of play. Since suffering their first loss in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) in four years, the Stars have responded by not allowing a goal in four straight matches. The streak began with a scoreless tie with Central Region powerhouse the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, October 9. The following day the Stars logged a 6-0 victory over Clarke College. The Stars then cruised to a 9-0 victory over Rockford College on Wednesday, October 13, before playing to another scoreless tie with Centre College, which is ranked eighth in the Central Region.
In the match against Rockford College, the Stars’ Erik Elizondo scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the game’s third minute as the Stars out-shot the Regents 40-0.
Nate Hirt, Seth Fallik and Pat Collins each scored two goals apiece while Ryan Fulton and Steve Clevenger chipped in a goal apiece to round out the effort for the Stars.
Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Maendel has played 324 of the 400 minutes in net for the Stars, including playing all 110 minutes in the scoreless ties against UW-Oshkosh and Centre College. During the stretch Maendel has logged nine saves, including two saves in the win over Centre College on Saturday.
The Stars now boast an 11-2-2 overall record with four games left on their schedule before the NIIC tournament.
