Dominican Stars inch towards season goal
The Dominican University volleyball team took the first step towards its season goal of winning the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) championship on Tuesday, knocking off defending champion Rockford College 3-1.
The Stars prevailed by scores of 32-30, 30-24, 31-33, 30-28 behind the stellar play of freshman outside-hitter Melanie Hach. Hach paced the Stars with 31 digs and 17 kills on 39 total attacks with just four errors. To date, the freshman standout has posted a team-high 145 kills in 43 games and is second on the team with 221 digs.
Senior libero Sandra Nowicki also played well for the Stars, posting 29 digs, while freshman Elizabeth Hannaken and junior Haley Ostrander racked up 13 kills apiece. Junior Emily Kluczynski led the Stars with 50 assists.
As a team, the Stars posted a .208 hitting percentage as compared to the Regents, who hit just .140.
The Stars then went on to knock off Lake Forest College 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-26) on Thursday night. The freshmen combination of Hannaken and Hach paced the Stars as each posted 11 kills. Nowicki racked up 31 digs while Hach had 16.
The Stars then traveled to Webster University where they split matches against Webster and Maryville colleges on Saturday. The Stars began the day with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-19) sweep of Maryville. Hach again led the charge with 12 kills, posting a .310 hitting percentage, and 19 digs.
However, the Stars then fell to Webster 3-1 (29-31, 30-19, 30-24, 30-24). This time Hannaken and junior Kate Zintak posted double-digit kills with ten apiece.
The Stars currently hold a 7-8 overall record and are 1-0 in the NIIC. The Stars will travel to Eureka College on Tuesday, September 21, for their lone match this week, but will host neighborhood rival Concordia University (IL) on September 28, at 7:00 p.m.
