Theology Department Offers Study Tour of Rome

Dominican University’s theology department is offering a study trip to Rome this winter, focusing on the early history of the Christian Church. Participants will depart for Italy on January 5 and return January 12, 2005.

For those participants who elect to take this study tour for college credit, the tour will be preceded in December by three classroom sessions of academic preparation. These sessions will focus on the birth of the Church, the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, the development of liturgy and prayer and a review of Church Fathers. Students will be required to maintain a journal during the trip and complete a term paper.

In Rome, participants will visit the Roman Forum and Colosseum, the Basilica of San Clemente, the Pantheon, the Vatican Museums, the Borghese Gallery and St. Peter’s Basilica among other sites.

The tour will be led by Dr. Hugh McElwain, professor of theology at Dominican. Dr. McElwain received his doctorate in theology at St. Alexis International College in Rome and has spent many years living in the city.

The cost of this tour is $2,050, which includes roundtrip airfare, housing in twin-bedded rooms, Continental breakfast daily and the service of a deluxe motor coach throughout the trip.

Space on this unique study tour is very limited. For more information, call Dr. Hugh McElwain at (708) 524-6660.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
