Dominican Stars travel to 21st ranked

The Dominican University Stars traveled to Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, on Saturday to take on the Lynx, the nation’s 21 st ranked team, and the Stars fell 3-0 for the first time in 2004.

The Stars fell behind 1-0 in the game’s fifth minute as the Lynx beat freshman goalie Jay Henderson, who was starting in net for Jonathan Maendel.   Maendel suffered a knee injury in the Stars’ 3-2 victory over Concordia University (WI) earlier in the week.

Rhodes added another goal in the first half and then scored the lone goal of the second half in the game’s 56 th minute to take the win.   The Stars were out-shot for just the second time all season as the Lynx launched 12 shots to the Stars’ seven.

In the win against Concordia University (WI) on Wednesday, the Stars twice took a one-goal lead only to have the Falcons storm back with a goal of their own to knot the score at 2-2.   Then in the game’s 66 th minute, freshman Jeff Smanz scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season to lift the Stars past the Falcons.

Senior Erik Elizondo scored his fifth goal of the year to give the Stars the 1-0 advantage and then freshman Elvin Perez scored his first collegiate goal to put the Stars ahead 2-1.

Maendel recorded four saves in 90 minutes of work for his fifth victory of the year, but suffered a knee injury on a collision with a Falcons’ player late in the second half.

The Stars moved their overall record to 5-1.   On Wednesday, the Stars will travel to Illinois Wesleyan University for a 7:00 p.m. game and then will host Ripon College on Saturday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m.
