Stars Start New Winning Streak
The Dominican University men’s soccer team has begun a new winning streak after losing to Rhodes College, the nation’s 21st ranked team, on September 18. Since then, the Stars rattled off back-to-back wins against Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) 3-1 and Ripon College 7-1.
Senior forward Erik Elizondo lifted the Stars to an early lead against IWU with his first goal of the game in the sixth minute. The Titans answered with a goal of their own with just nine minutes remaining in the first half to knot the score at 1-1. Elizondo then scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Pat Collins just two minutes into the second half.
Elizondo continued his hot play on Saturday against Ripon. Elizondo tied Dominican University for goals in a game, netting six goals as the Stars cruised to their seventh victory of the season.
Elizondo again helped the Stars to an early lead with a goal in the game’s sixth minute. Senior Steve Lodes then scored his second goal of the season and Elizondo scored the game’s next three goals before Ripon scored their lone goal of the game. Elizondo then struck twice more, including the record-tying sixth goal of the game in the 88th minute of play.
The pair of wins improved the Stars’ record to 7-1 overall with an upcoming match against Central Region rival Wheaton College on Wednesday, September 29, at 4:00 p.m. at Dominican University. The Stars will then host Edgewood College on Saturday, October 2, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
