Performing Arts Series Presents Gillian Welch
The Dominican University Performing Arts Series begins its 2004-2005 season with the timeless American music of Gillian Welch and Old Crow Medicine Show on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. The concert will take place in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 West Division Street, River Forest, Illinois. For tickets and information, call (708) 524-6942.Gillian Welch and her musical partner David Rawlings bring a modern sensibility to melodies that feel deeply familiar, evoking the mournful depth of Appalachian balladry and the grit of gospel blues. Most famous for her Grammy Award-winning work as a producer and vocalist on the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Welch wrings new life from sepia-toned images. In spite of her reverence for the instrumentation and songbooks of earlier generations, Welch’s four albums embrace the energy and imagery of rock-and-roll, particularly on 2001’s Time (The Revelator) and 2003’s Soul Journey, which include references to the Steve Miller Band and Elvis Presley. Her songs have been widely recorded by other singers, including Ryan Adams, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Kathy Mattea and Tricia Yearwood. They are the work of a true revivalist, raising the past alongside more modern spirits.
Kicking off the concert will be Old Crow Medicine Show, an acoustic quintet whose gigs crackle with rock-and-roll spark while capturing the spirit of traditional American music. Their self-titled debut recording, produced by David Rawlings, includes gutsy originals, hard-driving interpretations of folk standards, a Leadbelly-inspired cover of “CC Rider,” and an update of Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel.”

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
