US News & World Report Names Dominican Among Best

Dominican University was again named to the top 10 percent of Midwest master’s level universities by US News & World Report’s prestigious annual publication, America’s Best Colleges, 2005 edition. Dominican is ranked in 14 th place and is one of only three Illinois institutions to rank in the top 15 master’s level universities.

This is the sixth year in a row that Dominican University was included in the top tier among Midwest master’s level universities. The honor coincides with the enrollment this fall of the largest freshman class in the university’s 102-year history. In addition to the top tier ranking, Dominican was named by the magazine as the ‘best value” in the Midwest for the seventh consecutive year.

US News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges is an annual examination of 1,400 American colleges and universities. The report defines a master’s level university such as Dominican as an institution that provides a full range of undergraduate and master’s level programs.

Dominican tied in the rankings with North Central College. Other area universities included in the top tier include Benedictine University (31), North Park University (42), St. Xavier University (46), Concordia University (48), and Lewis University (52). Bradley University was ranked sixth on the list.

“To be ranked so high in the list of premier Midwest institutions is a testament to Dominican’s quality and vitality,” said Dr. Donna M. Carroll, university president. “This quality is reflected not only in our large enrollment this fall but also the retention of our students from last year.”& amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; lt; /p>

US News & World Report explains that its rankings are based on a nonpartisan view of what matters most in an education. Specifically, the report measures several different categories to determine an institution’s rank, including assessment by administrators at peer institutions, student retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving rate.

In addition to the US News & World Report’s annual examination, Dominican University received significant ranking in the 2004 National Survey of Student Engagement. The NSSE, an alternative assessment of universities, is sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Pew Forum on Undergraduate Learning. According to the NSSE report, Dominican University students ranked their experiences at the university significantly higher than students across the nation in relationships with faculty members, quality of academic and career advising, growth in understanding oneself and in understanding people of other racial and economic backgrounds, and developing a personal code of values and ethics and a deepened sense of spirituality.

This reinforces the US News ranking for Dominican and demonstrates the university’s commitment to small classes and a personal attention with its faculty/student ratio of 12 to 1 and a quality education with a diverse environment.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs through the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Graduate School of Business and Information Systems, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work and the Institute for Adult Learning.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
