Stars Looking to Improve from Last Year
The Dominican University women’s soccer program will look to improve upon an 8-11-0 record in 2003. The Stars played in eight games decided by one goal, going 1-7-0 in those games and losing three in overtime, two of which were lost in double-overtime.“It’s tough to feel like you are always right there but come up just short,” said head coach Joanna Fulton. “Hopefully last year provided us with the experience we need to always play with composure and begin to win close games.”
Fulton returns 11 letter winners from the 2003 squad, including seniors Renee Vai and Nicole Miller who anchored the Stars’ offense and defense respectively.
Vai, a forward, provided much of the Stars’ offense last year, scoring 33 of the team’s 53 goals. Vai finished the season second in the nation with 33 goals in 19 games for a 1.74 goals per game average.
Offensively, the Stars have retained a pair of sophomores who scored three goals apiece during their freshman season as forwards and their most experienced midfielder. Jaime Mills added four assists and Jazmin Contreras added two and will provide some offensive support for Vai up top, while junior Jessica Levitt will anchor the Stars’ midfield and direct the flow of action. Levitt posted two goals and four assists in 18 games in 2003.
Miller enters her senior season having started every game in net for the Stars during the previous three years. In 2003 she recorded 116 saves, earning a shutout in seven of the team’s eight victories.
Along with Miller, Fulton returns three of her four starters from her 2003 defense. Seniors Cristina Donofrio and Mamello Tekateka return along with sophomore Elizabeth Fulton.
“Having an experienced backline should keep us in most games,” said Fulton. “If our defense plays as well as it did last year in conference, we should be really competitive in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference.”
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
