DU Stars Look to Capitalize on 2003 Success

The Dominican University men’s soccer team rolls into the 2004 season after one of the most successful seasons in the school’s history. The Stars concluded the 2003 season with a 20-3-1 overall record, going 5-0-0 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) and capturing the conference championship. The Stars were then granted a berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament and made the most of their opportunity, fighting all the way to the Elite Eight and ending the season as the sixth ranked team in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The Stars return a core of starters, led by a trio of seniors: forward Erik Elizondo, midfielder Steve Lodes and goalkeeper Jonathan Maendel.

Maendel anchored the nation’s seventh ranked defense with a goals-against-average of 0.41 as the Stars surrendered just 10 goals in 24 games. “We played great team defense last year,” said head coach Erick Baumann. “While we have a large part of that defense returning we do need to find a way to replace last year’s team co-M.V.P.s Felipe Samaniego and Dan Eagan.”

Offensively, Elizondo and Lodes return to the nation’s tenth leading offense of a year ago, averaging 3.58 goals per game. Elizondo ended the season ranked fourth in the nation with .88 assists per game and ninth in the nation with 2.63 points per game. Lodes was the Stars’ third leading goal scorer and was fourth on the team in points with seven goals and eight assists in 24 games.

“We lost some key pieces from last year’s team,” said Baumann. “However, we have a great group of guys returning who gained invaluable experience last year and we added a group of guys who we feel can step in and contribute right away.”

The Stars will add a group of about 16 freshmen and transfers to the 2004 roster. This group will be expected to replace the talent lost from last year’s team.

“We have lots of talented players on our roster this year,” said Baumann, “and we are looking for great things out of everybody. We have one of the tougher schedules in our region but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
