Stars Drop Heartbreaker to Finish Season

The Dominican University Stars played its final game of the 2004 season in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) softball tournament. The Stars, the tourney’s six-seed, drew the Clarke College Crusaders, the three-seed. The Stars came up just short in the search for an upset 5-4.

The Stars fell behind 4-0 after three innings but a four-run rally in the top of the fourth, ignited by a three-run homerun by senior Katie Martin (Forest Park, IL/Fenwick), kept the Stars in the game.

The Crusaders came back to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth and kept the Stars at bay the rest of the way.

Jen Gianos (Morton Grove, IL/Niles West) went the distance for the Stars and took the loss. Gianos allowed just two earned runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings of work.

The Stars finished the season with a single-season record 11 wins. The old record of eight wins was reached in each of the last two seasons with Head Coach Michelle Oswald at the helm.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
