Dominican University Stars on a Winning Streak
The Dominican University Stars put together back-to-back wins for the first time this year, knocking off Eureka and Alverno colleges last week.On Wednesday night, the Stars trailed the Eureka College Red Devils 29-22 at the half, but outscored the Red Devils 50-30 over the game’s final 20 minutes to pull out a 72-59 victory.
The Stars shot an amazing 81 percent from the field in the second half, going 17-for-21 from the field and 6-for-8 from three, to dispose of their Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) opponent.
Melissa Lounds (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood) led all scorers, pouring in 26 points in 36 minutes. Lounds connected on 9 of 15 shots from the field, going 4-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Lounds’ 26 points, nine field goals and four three-point field goals were all-season highs for the Stars.
Jamie Baird (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) and Erin Howard (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) rounded out the Stars’ offensive scoring attack, chipping in 19 and 15 points respectively. Howard also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the winning effort.
The Stars then knocked off the Alverno College Inferno on Saturday 72-45. Lounds again paced the Stars offense, scoring 20 points, shooting 61 percent from the field. Lounds also added five steals in 23 minutes of work.
Howard added 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the winning effort.
The pair of wins pushed the Stars’ overall record to 6-12. Dominican currently holds a 2-4 record in conference play and will return to NIIC action on Wednesday evening at Clarke College in Iowa.
