Stars Notch Win Against Stephens

With the 2003-04 season winding down, the Dominican University Stars squeezed three games in last week, going 1-2 on the week.

On Tuesday, the Stars fell to Aurora University 56-40. As a team, the Stars managed to shoot just 27 percent from the field and 21 percent from behind the three-point line.

Melissa Lounds (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood) and Kristin Cook (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) were the top scorers for the Stars with 13 points apiece. Cook shot 5-for-10 from the field, including three 3-point field goals.

The Stars surrendered 14 offensive rebounds to the Spartans in the loss, as they were out-rebounded 40-33.

The Stars then hosted neighborhood rival Concordia University on Thursday. Trailing by as many as 12 in the game’s first ten minutes, the Stars battled back to take the lead in the second half but fell short 55-52.

Sophomore Meghan Toppel (Hometown, IL/Oak Lawn) led the Stars with 12 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes. Toppel was 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Freshman Melissa Fleming (Homewood, IL/Marian Catholic) scored a season-high 10 points in the losing effort. Fleming logged a career-high 18 minutes and took advantage of the opportunity, connecting on two of five 3-point field goal attempts.

On Sunday, the Stars defeated Stephens College 74-39 at home. Toppel again paced the Stars’ offense, pouring in 16 points in 18 minutes and grabbing six rebounds.

The Stars moved to 7-16 overall and 2-8 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference with just two games remaining in the regular season.
