Dominican University Presents Pippin
Dominican University proudly presents Pippin, the musical story of a young prince’s search for fulfillment, in a Theatre Arts lab production directed by Krista Hansen. The production opens on Saturday, March 27 and runs through Sunday, April 4 in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 West Division Street, River Forest. For tickets and information, call (708) 524-6942.Pippin takes shape as a play within a play as a company of singers and dancers presents the story of King Charlemagne’s son, Pippin, who attempts to find his “corner of the sky.” The young man’s existential quest leads him through politics, war, love, sex, and more, until he is forced to chose between continued youthful despair or a practical contentment.
The score for Pippin was composed by Stephen Schwartz, winner of three Academy Awards and composer of many Broadway shows, including Godspell, Children of Eden, Working and his latest hit, Wicked. Schwartz also contributed songs to the animated film The Prince of Egypt and the television special Geppetto. He wrote the lyrics for Disney’s Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The book for Pippin was written by Roger O. Hirson, a renowned television and film author who began his career in the 1940s. The script, which was nominated for a Tony Award in 1973, was considered one of the most daring and unusual musicals of its time. Due to the adult nature of the themes of this musical, Pippin is recommended for audiences over 16 years of age.
