DU Book Club Discusses The Grass is Singing
Dominican University’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, March 25 to discuss Doris Lessing’s first novel, The Grass is Singing. The book club meets at 7:00 p.m. in Room 002 of the Rebecca Crown Library on the Main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. The Grass is Singing is an understated social critique of apartheid South Africa during the early/mid 20th century. The main character, Mary Turner, a confident and independent young woman, becomes miserable after marrying an unproductive farmer and spending many boring years living on the farm. When an intriguing black servant, Moses, arrives on the farm, Mary and Moses become ensnared in a net of increasing attraction and repulsion, which leads up to the explosive closing scene of the book.
