Stars Open Conference with Win Over Cougars

The Dominican University Stars opened conference play on Wednesday, January 7, with a 65-56 win over the Concordia University Cougars.

Eric Dunn (Chicago, IL/Curie) paced all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and an 11-for-12 performance from the free-throw line. Dunn added seven rebounds and six assists for the Stars.

The Stars’ Steve Preston (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) and Ocie Peet (Racine, WI/Horlick) chipped in with 18 and 11 points respectively. Peet rounded out a double-double performance, grabbing 14 rebounds in the winning effort.

The Stars trailed by as many as 10 points during the first half, but rallied in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 38-21 during the game’s final 20 minutes to pull out the nine-point victory.

The Stars then hosted Clarke College on Saturday. Despite an 18-point effort by Peet, the Stars fell short 63-53. Derek Pedersen (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.

The Stars now stand at 3-12 on the year and 1-1 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC). The Stars return to the court on Wednesday, January 14, as they travel to Benedictine University for a 7:30 p.m. game.
