Stars Let Pair of Games Slip Away
The Dominican University Stars women’s basketball team fell to 1-3 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) after losses to Benedictine University and Aurora University.The Stars began the week with a 86-67 loss at Benedictine University on Tuesday night.
The Stars, who lost starting forward Wioletta Koziol (Mt. Prospect, IL/Prospect) prior to the game, trailed by just five (39-34) at the half after an exciting first half that featured five ties and six lead changes.
However, the Eagles pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 20 points throughout the half, never surrendering the lead.
For the Stars, Kristin Cook (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) led the way with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in 38 minutes. The senior guard shot 8-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-9 from behind the three-point line.
Melissa Lounds (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood) and Jaime Baird (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) chipped in 14 and 10 points respectively in the losing effort.
As a team, the Stars shot an impressive 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, but shot just 38 percent for the game after a 9-for-22 shooting performance in the second half. The Stars also turned the ball over 31 times while managing just 13 assists.
The Stars then fell to Aurora University on Saturday 58-50. Four Stars scored in double-figures, led by Baird’s 14 points. Lounds and Erin Howard (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) chipped in 11 points apiece while Cook added 10 in the losing effort.
The Stars now stand at 4-10 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, January 24, at Rockford College at 1:00 p.m.
