Stars Fall to Top Teams in the NIIC

The Dominican University Stars squared off against two of the top teams in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) last week and came up with a pair of losses.

On Wednesday, the Stars lost to the Benedictine University Eagles 94-65 at Benedictine. The Stars trailed by just 11 at the break after shooting 50 percent from the field (15-for-30) and 57 percent from the three-point arc (4-for-7) in the first half.

However, the Stars could not keep pace as they cooled off from the field in the second half, scoring just 27 points over the game’s final 20 minutes.

Eric Dunn (Chicago, IL/Curie) led the Stars with 17 points while Steve Preston (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) and Derek Pedersen (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) added 16 points apiece in the loss. Ocie Peet (Racine, WI/Horlick) and Jason Polakowski (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) chipped in eight points apiece to round out the Stars’ scoring.

The Stars then fell to Aurora University on Saturday 81-58. Pedersen posted a career-high 25 points on the Spartans, shooting 11-for-20 in 37 minutes of action. Dunn and Peet added 11 points apiece in the losing effort.

The pair of losses dropped Dominican University to 3-14 overall and 1-3 in the NIIC.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
