Dominican University Presents Edward Albee
Dominican University’s Center Stage proudly presents An Evening with Edward Albee, one of the country’s leading dramatists for more than four decades as well as winner of three Pulitzer Prizes and a National Medal of Arts. Albee will discuss the state of theater and the arts in America on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 West Division Street, River Forest, Illinois. For tickets and information, call (708) 524-6942.Albee’s 25 plays have stirred audiences since the late 1950s. His early triumphs (such as The Zoo Story and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) detail the disillusionments of the Eisenhower era and the turbulence of the 1960s. He earned his first Pulitzer Prize in 1966 for A Delicate Balance. His second Pulitzer was earned in 1975 for Seascape, a fable-like work about a vacationing retired couple and a pair of talking sea lizards. In 1991, Albee scored a third Pulitzer for Three Tall Women, his bitter assessment of the life of a wealthy, cold, manipulative woman (based on his own adopted mother). Albee’s latest play, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? , is a shocking investigation of the limits of love; it won a Tony Award for best play in 2002.
In his lecture, Albee will address the common themes of his works and share his belief that arts are fundamental to a democratic society. The playwright feels that it is an artist’s responsibility to provoke audience members in order to confront questions of morality and challenge personal values.
