Stars Pick up Second Win
The Dominican University Stars picked up their second win of the year with a split at the Eureka College Classic this weekend against MacMurray College and Blackburn College. Earlier in the week, the Stars fell to 1-3 with a loss at Lakeland College.On Tuesday, December 2, the Stars fell to Lakeland College 72-37. Shooting just 28.8 percent from the field, the Stars struggled offensively, connecting on just 15 of 42 attempts from the field. Seniors Erin Howard (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) and Kristin Cook (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) led the Stars with 13 and 10 points respectively. Cook added five rebounds and four steals in 37 minutes of action.
The Stars then traveled to Eureka College for the Eureka Classic on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Stars battled MacMurray College in a 60-54 loss. Wioletta Koziol (Mt. Prospect, IL/Prospect) led the Stars with 18 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort while Cook chipped in 12 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.
The Stars rebounded on Saturday, hanging on to a 47-45 victory over Blackburn College after jumping out to a 32-19 lead at the half. In a very balanced offensive attack, the Stars were paced by junior Melissa Lounds (Streamwood, IL/Streamwood) and Cook who scored 11 points apiece. Sophomore Rachel Oliver (Manchester, MO/Parkway South) added 10 points and 14 rebounds in the winning effort.
Cook was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. On the weekend, Cook averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 steals.
The Stars currently hold a 2-4 overall record and return to action on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Milwaukee School of Engineering.
