DU’s Christine Barry Receives Scholarship

Christine Barry, a graduate of Queen of Peace High School and St. Albert the Great Elementary School, has been awarded a scholarship to Dominican University from the International Door Association Foundation. Barry was among 10 students in the United States and Canada to receive scholarships from the association.

Christine was nominated for the scholarship by Kathleen Anagnos, president of Anagnos Door Company in Justice, IL. Kathleen first met Christine about ten years ago when she served as the leader of her Girl Scout troop.

“I have always been very impressed with Christine,” said Anagnos. “She was friendly and always had a smile on her face. Today she is very hard-working and a gifted student but still has that same friendly and cooperative personality. I am thrilled that IDA is able to help her pursue her college education.”

Christine was named an Illinois State Scholar, a Merit Recognition Scholar and was an honor roll student during all four years of high school. Her extra-curricular activities included involvement in the National Honor Society, Class Council, Students for Peace, Big Sisters/Little Sisters, soccer and the St. Catherine of Siena Scholars, a program for students engaged in academic pursuits beyond their course of study.

She has also been involved in numerous service activities that have taken far beyond her hometown. In Vanceburg, KY, she helped construct an apartment building for the poor, visited nursing homes and assisted at adult day care centers. She also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and at the Inspiration Café, a restaurant-style soup kitchen for Chicago’s homeless.

Christine’s father, Dave Barry, is purchasing manager of the Anagnos Door Company. Kathleen’s daughter, Victoria, also is a student at Dominican University. Both the Barry and Anagnos families live in Burbank.

The International Door Association represents firms that sell, install and service door access systems and related projects. The association established its foundation three years ago to assist selected employees and their family members to achieve their educational goals.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Graduate School of Business and Information Systems, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work and the Institute for Adult Learning. In the 2004 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U. S. News & World Report ranked Dominican in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a best value for the sixth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
