DU Claims NIIC Tournament Championship
The Dominican University Stars reclaimed the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) tournament championship on Sunday, defeating local conference rival Concordia University 3-0.In an intense game, the Stars’ David Niederholtmeyer (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) scored the game-winner just five minutes into the action off a pass from Steve Lodes (St. Louis, MO/Rosary).
The score remained 1-0 until the game’ 67th minute of play, when Niederholtmeyer assisted on an Erik Elizondo (Cicero, IL/Morton East) goal. The pair hooked up again as Niederholtmeyer again assisted on an Elizondo goal in the game’s 82nd minute.
The Stars advanced to the championship game after defeating Aurora University 5-0 on Friday afternoon. In that game, the Stars out-shot their opponent by a 23-0 margin.
Niederholtmeyer again netted the game-winner for the Stars, but this time the goal came just 53 seconds into the game. Before all the scoring was done, Niederholtmeyer added two more goals for a hat-trick.
With just one regular season match left at North Central on Thursday, the Stars hold a 17-2 record for the year and went 5-0 in the NIIC during regular season play.
