Stars Collide with Rockford for NIIC Championship
The Dominican University Stars entered the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) tournament as the second-seed team with a 4-2 regular season record in conference play and emerged right where they started, as the second-place team in the NIIC.On Tuesday the Stars swept Clarke College 3-0 to advance to the winners’ bracket in the double-elimination tournament. Seniors Mary Welk (Chicago, IL/Resurrection) and Katie Martin (Forest Park, IL/Fenwick) paced the Dominican offense with 21 kills and 22 assists respectively. Welk completed the winning effort with 35 digs.
In the second round, the Stars battled back from a two-game deficit and won the next three to earn a 3-2 (27-30, 24-30, 30-22, 30-13, 15-6) victory over Benedictine University. Welk and Martin continued to make the most of their senior seasons, again leading the Stars with 33 kills and 33 assists respectively.
The win pushed the Stars to the third-round to face regular-season champion Rockford College. The Stars toppled the Regents in a thrilling four-game match 30-26, 33-31, 32-34, 33-31. Welk continued to crush the conference competition, racking up 33 kills and 27 digs to lead the team. Junior Becky Knotek (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) piled up six total blocks to frustrate Rockford’s offensive attack.
The Stars’ third straight win pushed them into the championship round, where they would have to be defeated in two-straight matches. Rockford eventually battled back to the championship to meet the Stars. The Regents proved too much for the Stars and won back-to-back matches 3-1 to capture the conference championship and hand the Stars second place.
Welk tried her best to carry the Stars to their first-ever NIIC championship with a 27-kill match and a 31-kill match. Martin recorded two 30-plus assist games in the championship round as well.
The Stars finished the regular season with a 26-13 record, an improvement from the 22-21 record just one-year ago.
