Dominican University received word late Sunday night that it had been selected as a host site for the opening round game of the 2003 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Stars, ranked 21st in the nation, will host the Griffins of Fontbonne University on Wednesday, November 12 for a 1:00 p.m. game. The Stars are returning to the tournament for the second straight year after falling to Hope College 4-0 last year. Wednesday’s game marks the first national athletic competition to be held on the Dominican University campus.
Dominican University transitioned to the NCAA from the NAIA in 2000. Since joining the NCAA the Stars have racked up a 68-15-5 record and won four Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) regular season championships and three conference tournaments.
This season the Stars went 18-2 in regular season play and 5-0 in the NIIC. The Stars are currently ranked third in the Central Region behind the nation’s only two undefeated teams, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Trinity (TX). A win on Wednesday would push the Stars into the second round of the tournament at Denison University (OH) on November 14.
