Dominican’s GSLIS Receives Federal Grant

The Alliance Library System, in partnership with Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, has been awarded a $435,456 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to recruit the next generation of library students in Illinois. The grant is part of a $10 million national initiative to offset a critical shortage of librarians due to retirements in the next few years.

This grant will help to recruit and mentor 31 graduate library students in rural Illinois. Upon graduation, these students will work in rural schools, and public, academic, and special interest libraries serving citizens of underserved rural areas. This program will serve as a model for recruiting and educating rural librarians.

“This grant will enable the Alliance Library System and Dominican University to build on a partnership that reflects our commitment to preparing the next generation of librarians. Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science is delighted to enter this new phase in our commitment to serve Illinois libraries and librarians,” noted Prudence Dalrymple, dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science.

In the May 2000 issue of Library Journal magazine it was reported that 40 percent of the nation’s library directors plan to retire in nine years or less. The March 2002 issue of American Libraries magazine showed that, based on 1990 census data, almost 58 percent of professional librarians will reach the age of 65 between 2005 and 2019.

The IMLS grant is designed to offset these statistics by providing scholarships to graduate students in library and information science, to support distance learning technology for training programs in underserved areas, and to recruit librarians with diverse language skills.

A total of 27 grants were awarded to recruit 558 individuals at the doctoral, master’s, and paraprofessional levels. Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science was the only graduate library program in the State of Illinois to receive a grant.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Graduate School of Business and Information Systems, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work and the Institute for Adult Learning. In the 2004 issue of America’s Best Colleges, US News & World Report ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the sixth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
