DU Takes It To The Next Stop—Elite Eight

The Dominican University men’s soccer team has made it a habit of making history over the last week. On Sunday, November 9, the Stars became the first Dominican University team selected by the NCAA to host a national tournament. On Wednesday, the soccer team became the first Dominican team to win a NCAA tournament game. Two more victories have placed the team in the Division III Men’s Soccer Elite Eight, the farthest any team has ever advanced in Dominican University history.

The Stars opened the 2003 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament on Wednesday with a 0-0 tie against Fontbonne University. Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Maendel (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) recorded his seventh consecutive shutout and 13th shutout of the season turning away three shots on goal.

With the score tied after 110 minutes, the teams moved on to a shootout. The Stars, who had dominated the game, prevailed in the shootout 4-3 in six shooters, ultimately earning the right to advance to the second round of the tournament.

In round two, the Stars traveled to Denison University to take on the Denison Big Red. The Stars stunned the home team with a 2-1 victory.

The Stars staved to an early lead in the first half on a goal by David Niederholtmeyer (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) in the game’s 28th minute. The Big Red answered with a goal of its own just three minutes into the second half. However, Niederholtmeyer netted his second goal in the game’s 86th minute on a two-on-one breakaway with Erik Elizondo (Cicero, IL/Morton East).

The win put the Stars in the round sixteen on Sunday against John Carroll University at Denison. The Stars again jumped out to an early lead in the game’s 12th minute on a goal by Elizondo. This time, the Stars kept their opponent off the board as Maendel recorded three saves en route to the 2-0 victory.

The Stars will now face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the Elite Eight on Saturday at Oshkosh at 12:30 p.m.
