NIIC Announces Post-season Awards
The Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) released its post-season awards for the fall season including all-conference teams, players of the year, and coaches of the year. The Dominican University Stars landed 11 student athletes on the first-team all-conference teams.In men’s soccer the Stars made a clean sweep of the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year awards as well as landing six players on the first-team all-conference list. Head coach Erick Baumann nabbed the Coach of the Year award after winning the conference championship, going 5-0-0 in the NIIC in 2003 and 20-0-0 over the last four years.
Senior Felipe Samaniego captured the Player of the Year Award as a midfielder for Dominican. Senior defender Dan Eagan, junior goalkeeper Jonathan Maendel, junior forward Erik Elizondo, junior midfielder Steve Lodes, and sophomore forward David Niederholtmeyer all earned their spots on the all-conference team as well.
The NIIC coaches named the Stars’ Meghan Maxwell the coach of the year in volleyball. Maxwell led the Stars to a 26-13 record in her first season at the helm.
Senior Mary Welk captured her second straight Player of the Year award in volleyball. Welk was joined on the all-conference team by junior teammate Becky Knotek. Senior Katie Martin and sophomores Haley Ostrander and Sandra Nowicki all received honorable mention awards from the conference.
In women’s soccer, juniors Renee Vai and Nicole Miller along with senior Kristin Cook all landed spots on the all-conference roster. Miller recorded seven shutouts on the year with Cook captaining the Stars’ defense while Vai led the Stars with 33 goals in 19 games.
