Center Stage Presents Sweet Honey in the Rock
Dominican University’s Center Stage proudly presents Grammy Award-winning female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock on Saturday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. The ensemble, wearing colorful clothing reflecting their African-American, African and Caribbean heritage and influence, delves into a repertoire that draws on traditional spirituals, gospel, jazz, hip hop, improvisation and rhythm and blues to recount history, expose injustice and promote activism. Using a sign-language interpreter, the ensemble brings to the deaf community, as well as the hearing community, the world of African chants and freedom songs from around the world.
Sweet Honey in the Rock was founded in 1973 by Bernice Johnson Reagon as an outgrowth of the workshops she offered as vocal director of the Black Repertory Company of Washington, D. C. Reagon’s personal history includes time spent in jail for promoting civil rights in the South in the 1960s, and the receipt of a MacArthur Foundation genius grant. She has served as a curator of the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution.
Sweet Honey was featured in the soundtrack of Boycott, the 2001 HBO-TV movie about the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks. With composer James Horner, the ensemble created and recorded the soundtrack for Freedom Song, a film produced by Danny Glover. The film tells the story of Bob Moses and the student organizers of SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) who joined with local leaders in McComb, MS to launch a voter registration campaign.
Although Sweet Honey’s work is charged with the passion of their political and social activism, the ensemble has delighted audiences for over 30 years with songs of happiness and joy. This is an experience not to be missed.
Tickets for this special performance range from $20 to $40. An opportunity to meet the ensemble members at a post-show reception is available to those purchasing $85 tickets. For more information, contact the Center Stage box office at (708) 524-6942.
