Stars Maintain Perfect Record
The Dominican University Stars men’s soccer team remained perfect on the 2003 season with two
wins this week, moving its overall record to 6-0.
The Stars opened the week on Wednesday night, traveling to Wheaton College, ranked 19th in
the nation entering the game. The Stars stunned the Thunder, with the game’s first two goals en
route to the 2-1 victory.
Senior
Felipe Samaniego (River Grove/James Williams) gave the Stars an early 1-0 lead in
the game’s 20th minute of play as he beat Wheaton’s goalie to the bottom left corner of the goal on
a penalty kick. Samaniego’s penalty kick was set up when junior
Erik Elizondo (Cicero/Morton East) was taken down by a Thunder defenseman in the
box.
Elizondo scored a goal of his own in the second half to give the Stars the 2-0 advantage.
Junior goalie
Jonathan Maendel (Evanston/Evanston Township) carried a shutout into the 89th
minute of play, surrendering a goal with just over one second left to play. Maendel recorded four
saves in 90 minutes of play.
The Stars pushed its winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win over
University of Wisconsin-Superior at home. Junior
Steve Lodes (St. Louis, Mo./Rosary) gave the Stars a 1-0 lead on his first goal of
the game and the Stars never looked back.
The Stars return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Concordia University (WI) and then
return home to host Clarke College for the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference opener on Saturday,
September 20, at 3:30 p.m.
