Descent Exhibit Highlights Latino Artists
Dominican University’s O’Connor Art Gallery opens Descent, an exhibit showcasing the work of artists of Latino heritage, on Sunday, September 28 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the O’Connor Art Gallery, located on the main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. The exhibit features the printmaking of Elena Baca and the photography of Robert Buitron and Carlos Trujillo. According to Javier Camona, director of the O’Connor Art Gallery, Descent questions the convention of grouping artists by ethnic origin and offers an opportunity to see these artists’ work as distinct and unique rather than as a phenomenon of their minority status in the United States.
Elena Baca, a resident of New Mexico, explores the potential of myth in her collection of gum oil prints, combining photography and lithography techniques to create a deliberately obscured surface. Carlos Trujillo, a Chicago resident with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, uses photography to depict scenes reminiscent of movie stills. Robert Buitron, an art educator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the College of DuPage, uses humor in staged photographs incorporating cowboy and Indian mythology.
Descent continues through October 31. The O’Connor Art Gallery is located on the fourth floor of Lewis Hall. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For information, call (708) 524-6491.
