Book Club Discusses The Secret Life of Bees
Dominican University's Book Club will meet on Thursday, August 21 to discuss the best selling debut novel by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees. The book club, which is open to the public, will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 003 of the Rebecca Crown Library.
The story takes place in the South during the tumultuous days of 1964. Lily, a 14-year-old girl, and her black housekeeper run away from her stern and abusive father to Tiburon, South Carolina where they are taken in by the three black Boatwright sisters, August, May and June. The eccentric sisters are beekeepers who teach Lily the craft of beekeeping and the art of living and help her to come to grips with the loss of her mother ten years earlier.
For more information about the book club, contact Mary Pat Radke, assistant director of the Rebecca Crown Library, at (708) 524-6870 or at mradke@dom.edu.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
