DU Announces 2003–2004 Center Stage Season
Dominican University’s Center Stage will present a diverse range of theatrical productions, concerts and lectures during the 2003 – 2004 season. Season highlights include performances by internationally renowned mezzo soprano Denyce Graves; the quintessential leading lady of American musical theatre, Betty Buckley; and the Grammy Award-winning gospel a cappella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Center Stage, Dominican University’s fine and performing arts venue, is located in Lund Auditorium at the university’s main campus at 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. The 2003 – 2004 season includes the following: September 27, 2003: The season kicks off with the Aguijon Theatre Company’s production of !Lorca! Presented in celebration of Latino Heritage Month, !Lorca! recreates through live music, dance and dramatized readings the poetry and theatrical work of revered Spanish writer Ferderico Garcia Lorca. Readings will be primarily in Spanish. October 11, 2003: Grammy Award-winning female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock will delve into a repertoire that includes traditional spirituals, gospel, jazz, hip hop, rhythm and blues, and improvisation to bring alive the sacred music of the African American church. November 7, 8 and 9, 2003: Center Stage proudly presents William Shakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy Twelfth Night , a play that celebrates all of the irrationality of love, featuring mistaken identities, misdirected passions, and love triangles. November 22, 2003: Tony Award-winning performer Betty Buckley, considered the leading lady of American musical theatre and star of stage, film, and television, blends jazz, pop, blues and Broadway classics into an enchanting evening of interpretive song. Join Dominican University for the President’s Signature Concert, held in honor of President Donna M. Carroll’s 10th anniversary. December 6 and 7, 2003: Based on the popular children’s book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever tells the hilarious story of one well-meaning couple’s attempt to put on the annual church Christmas pageant with the worst kids imaginable. January 17, 2004: Hailed for bringing chamber music to the MTV generation, the gifted Ahn Trio blends classical and contemporary music in a way that delights and surprises aficionados of both genres. Included in People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People issue, the Ahn sisters have been recognized for their virtuosic blending of rich sound and technique. February 7, 2003: Tony Award-nominated sisters Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callawayreturn to Chicago to present Sibling Revelry, an evening of Broadway, jazz and contemporary songs. Daughters of acclaimed Chicago public-TV journalist John Callaway, the Callaway sisters have carved names for themselves on Broadway, film (Liz sang the voice of Anastasia in the animated film) and television (Ann wrote the theme song for the popular sitcom The Nanny). February 21, 2004: Center Stage proudly presents Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee. Recipient of 1996 Kennedy Center honors and one of the most prominent forces in modern American theatre, Albee promises to provide an inspirational evening of storytelling. February 27, 28 and 29, 2004: Crimes of the Heart, by playwright Beth Henley, explores the bonds of family as it tells the story of three Southern sisters in comic crisis. March 27, 28 and April 2, 3 and 4, 2004: Journey with the young prince Pippin , the first-born son of Charlemagne, in his fairy-tale quest to discover the secret of true happiness and fulfillment. April 18, 2004: Center Stage is thrilled to present world-renowned vocal sensation Denyce Gravesin Dominican University’s 24th Annual Trustee Benefit Concert. Ms. Graves’ combination of expressive vocalism, elegant stage presence and exciting theatrical abilities have taken her to the world’s great opera houses and concert halls—see her here at Center Stage! June 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27, 2004: Center Stage closes its season with a student production of Rogers’ and Hammerstein’s landmark American musical, Oklahoma! Hailed as the best musical of the 20th century by the New York Drama Guild, this enduring musical is perfect for the whole family.
