Local Student Wins DU Science Scholarship

Christopher Gallicchio of Schiller Park, IL was recently awarded the Ida Brechtel Scholarship from Dominican University. Gallicchio is a 2003 graduate of East Leyden High School and will begin studies at Dominican this fall.

The Ida Brechtel Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship for high school seniors and transfer students who plan to major in biology or biology-chemistry at Dominican. Candidates must rank in the top 15 percent of their class with an ACT composite score of 26 or higher and a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better. Scholarships are awarded based on a letter of recommendation from a science teacher and a 250-word essay.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor's and master's degrees. Dominican University offers 51 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 18 graduate programs in four graduate schools through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Graduate School of Business Information Systems, the School of Education and the Graduate School of Social Work. In the 2003 issue of America's Best Colleges, US News & World Report ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master's level universities and as a best value for the fifth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
