Neuroscience Laboratories

Dominican features three state-of-the-art laboratories where neuroscience majors can learn about and conduct experimental research.

  • Behavioral Neuroscience Lab: Dr. Robert Calin-Jageman focuses on the mechanisms of learning and memory using sea slugs. The lab has tools that are used to help students analyze behavior, perform computer modeling and conduct electrophysiology.
  • Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Lab: Dr. Irina Calin-Jageman studies activity-based transcriptional regulation in cultured neurons. The lab is equipped to teach students cell culture and a variety of molecular and cellular research techniques.
  • Behavioral Genetics Lab: Dr. Scott Kreher focuses on the mechanisms by which flies develop and use their acute sense of smell.

Additionally, the program cultivates relationships with area research centers to help provide off-campus research experiences for majors.  For example, Tim Lazicki ’11 has recently worked conducting brain imaging research in the magneto-encephalography (MEG) lab at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
