Apparel Study Abroad

“Fashion is a global industry and it’s very appropriate that apparel students should travel the world to seek inspiration. Plus, any study abroad experience is definitely a plus in employers’ eyes.” – Tracy Jennings, EdD, Associate Professor of Apparel Design and Merchandising & Apparel Department Chair

Study abroad benefits all undergraduates, but with the European fashion capitals beckoning, it’s no wonder that the apparel department sends more of its students overseas than nearly any other department at Dominican.

Apparel students won't want to miss Paris: Essentials of French Fashion, a six credit-hour course specifically for apparel majors and minors. Students spend one month in Paris, the fashion capital of the world, and attend courses at the Paris American Academy. The intensive course provides an overview of the French fashion industry, an opportunity to become immersed in a specialization (design, couture or merchandising and communication) from a French fashion perspective. The course is conducted in English; however, students receive a hands-on introduction to French culture and language.

In addition, apparel students have the option of taking one or two fashion courses at Milan’s Instituto di Moda Burgo when they complete Dominican’s affiliate study abroad program in Milan, Italy. Students choose either a semester- or year-long option, live with Italian university students and study the Italian language.

“I had the privilege of studying abroad in Milan, Italy, where I was able to study fashion illustration at Instituto di Moda Burgo. I was not only able to explore another culture, but I also matured as a student and a designer.” – Bethany Ortiz ’10, Apparel Design & Apparel Merchandising
