Lecture:
Chicago the City at the Heart of GlobalizationChicago has always been a global city from its pre-fire flood of Irish and Eastern European immigrants to its post fire masses from all over the world. It has always connected itself to an international identity so strongly that its neighborhoods never became melting pots, retaining their ethnic connections, restaurants, churches, etc. When academic discovered "globalization" in the 1990s, it was already late to the game. Its businesses and its communities were already focused on what was happening in Europe, Asia, and, most important of all, Latin America. Social work aimed at the international community was essentially invented here as Jane Addams and a host of other reforms struggled to address the needs of an exploding immigrant population. We make a mistake when we measure this process solely on the basis of revenues and investment. The city has always been about its cultural stew of people, and that is where its world connection began.
What you’ll learn:
This lecture will look at the roots and growth of this process, then fast forward to measure globalization and its promises, kept and broken, in the modern era.
