Joyce Karon, member of the Illinois P-20 Council on education, will speak and answer questions on the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Math and the implications for school librarians and classroom teachers. She will also discuss the upcoming rollout of the Longitudinal Data System. The evening will begin with snacks and a tour of the new Butler Children’s Literature Center led by Thom Barthelmess, Curator. Joyce Karon is currently a member of the Illinois P-20 Council and is a former member of the Illinois State Board of Education and the former Coordinator of Library Media Services, Barrington Community Unit School District 220 - she will speak and answer questions at 6:00 p.m.

The Butler Center commits itself to imagination and wonder, encouraging and supporting adults in libraries, classrooms, childcare centers, and homes to engage young people with good books.

The Butler Children's Literature Center at Dominican University serves as an examination center for children's and young adult books published annually in the United States, and as an historical collection of the best children's and young adult literature published nationally and internationally. It also serves as an evidence-based, best practices professional collection in support of the application and integration of children's and young adult literature in classrooms, libraries, childcare centers, and homes.

The Butler Center was dedicated on January 10, 2009 in a program featuring Jon Scieszka, the Library of Congress's Inaugural National Ambassador for Young People's Literature and that day's recipient of an honorary doctorate of letters in celebration of Dominican University's Year of Youth Literacy. Administered by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Butler Children's Literature Center is located in the Rebecca Crown Library, room 214 at Dominican University's main campus at 7900 West Division Street in River Forest, Illinois. Founding partners at Dominican include the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the School of Education, the Rebecca Crown Library, the Butler Family Foundation, and an Anonymous Donor.

As a Sinsinawa sponsored institution, Dominican University prepares students to pursue truth, to give compassionate service, and to participate in the creation of a more just and humane world. The Butler Children's Literature Center will carry out its own mission as a reflection of that inspiration. The Butler Center will be an exemplary presence for its collections and programs regarding children's and young adult literature and for the professional materials that support their use with children and young adults.

The Butler Children’s Literature Center Advisory Board is comprised of education, library, literacy, literature, and youth services professionals and advocates, as well as university professors, publishers, and media producers. These distinguished Advisory Board members represent scores of organizations that serve the broad needs of youth services professions and provide essential library, literature, and literacy services and materials to millions of children and youth, both regionally and nationally.
