Christopher Chair in Business Ethics Lecture
Advancing Human Rights in Developing Countries: A Voluntary Opportunity or a Moral Obligation
for Business?
Over 100 people attended the 2011 Brennan School of Business Christopher Chair in Business
Ethics Lecture-
Advancing Human Rights in Developing Countries: A Voluntary Opportunity or a Moral Obligation
for Business? presented by Oliver Williams, C.S.C. on Wednesday,
February 1.
As a director at the United Nations Global Compact Foundation, Fr. Williams stated he’s encouraged to see how many companies are involved in projects that are advancing human rights around the world. The question he addressed is whether such projects should be considered a moral obligation, or are they to be viewed as simply examples of corporate philanthropy? Fr. Williams offered several studies and principles for guidance in addressing this issue and engaged the audience in a lively discussion following his lecture.
In addition to serving as Christopher Chair in Business Ethics, Rev. Oliver F. Williams is an Associate Professor of Management at University of Notre Dame, the director of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business, the editor of Peace Through Commerce (Notre Dame Press, 2008) and is a director at the United Nations Global Compact Foundation, the world’s largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative addressing human rights, conflict prevention and contributions to world peace. Williams is a Catholic priest and former Naval officer. He earned his doctorate from Vanderbilt University.
The Christopher Chair in Business Ethics was established by Doris and Jay Christopher to focus on ethical business practices through lectures, workshops and faculty and student initiatives.
