Jane E. Duggan ’67

In the summer of 1965, Jane E. Duggan ’67 and five other women from Rosary College made a trip to Greenwood, Mississippi. This was the most influential experience of Jane’s college years as it catapulted her into the fight for civil rights.

Over the years, her commitment to the struggle for civil rights has broadened into a commitment to diversity. As a woman in non-traditional work, Jane cut steel, built cars, loaded airplanes and spent 20 years as a mechanic in the post office. Each day, she fought for equal rights for women, minorities and wounded veterans.

Jane has been a member of seven unions and served as an officer of the American Postal Workers Union. Once she retired, Jane was elected to the state retiree chapter. She has won many settlements and disbursed money to members of class action grievances.

Recently, Jane has been active in “The Fight for 15”, a struggle to increase the minimum wage. She regularly participates in rallies and enjoys seeing young people fight for workers’ rights as she did decades ago.

Storytelling is one of Jane’s many passions and she has traveled the world to capture the lives of workers in photos. In 2010, she displayed her life’s work in a show called "Portraits of Global Labor."

Jane is the oldest of 11 children and her “curated family” fills her life with joy. Many of Jane’s “sisters” are the amazing women she met at Rosary, who are still a very important part of her life today.
