Your First Semester
Once you’ve agreed to attend Dominican, the real fun begins. The Academic Advising staff has created a nurturing, comprehensive process to help you establish yourself academically. Your advisor will be there every step of the way through your first semester and beyond.
Key events include:
- Freshman orientation (SOAR)
- Welcome Weekend
- Advising appointment throughout the academic year
- Major declaration
All freshmen are required to take a freshman seminar in their first semester. Your seminar professor will also serve as your academic advisor.
The Academic Advising staff has prepared sample first-year schedules. Each schedule lists courses that would be appropriate preparation for each of the university’s majors or programs.
In most cases, you may consider these an optional blueprint. At the very least, studying the sample schedules should help you refine your options, even if you’re still unsure about what your major will ultimately be.
The academic advising process begins in summer with the Student Orientation And Registration SOAR program. At this mandatory two-day campus visit, you will discover the tools needed to become a successful Dominican student.
At SOAR, the launch pad for your academic career, you will:
- Take your academic placement tests
- Meet with your advisor
- Register for classes (both fall and spring semester)
- Attend workshops
- Connect with campus resources and
- Meet your classmates
At the SOAR program, you will take the three placement tests: Modern Foreign Language, English/Writing and Math. The results of each test will be given to your advisor and will assist with appropriate selection of classes on the second day of SOAR. Please bring a pen and pencil with you to the tests.
