Rhetoric & Communications

The newly renamed rhetoric and communication major (formerly general communication major) teaches students how to be 21st-century citizens. Coursework emphasizes the role communication plays in shaping our reality in a variety of social and political settings.

Required courses bring theory and practice together, while other major requirements equip students with the competencies today’s employers seek, including:
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking and reading
  • Problem solving
  • Decision making
Students complete a rigorous academic program consisting of courses in:
  • General education
  • Historical and theoretical foundations
  • Research methods
  • Performance
  • Application
  • Practical experience

A degree in rhetoric and communication will provide a clearer understanding of the role communication plays in students’ personal and professional lives.

Careers Opportunities

Communications coursework tends to be broadly focused and multidisciplinary. As such, communications graduates have highly polished speaking and writing skills that help them stand out from the crowd, no matter what type of career they ultimately pursue.

Dominican’s communications programs help students develop what employers call “transferable skills”—the ability to:

  • Work well with others
  • Think critically
  • Learn quickly
  • Ask the right questions.

And their technical skills are good, too, giving Dominican students an edge in a crowded job market.

The skills acquired in the communications majors will prepare students for ethical, informed and rewarding careers in a wide range of fields, including the media, public relations and advertising. Their education will give them the insights they need to serve their respective audiences and to help create a more just world.
