Dominican’s Italian major concentrates on the language and cultures of the people of Italy. Advanced courses place particular emphasis on the historical and cultural aspects of Italian-language literature.

Italian majors must complete 32 semester hours in the language beyond ITAL 111, Intermediate Italian. Required courses focus on:

• Advanced language skills
• Italian civilization and culture
• Literature of Italy

Each graduating senior must complete an oral interview patterned on the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. In place of this interview, students may complete a written assessment

If the student has already completed a similar interview to complete requirements for the School of Education, that interview will suffice. The student must file those results with the Italian discipline director, however.

All Italian majors are encouraged to study abroad during their time at Dominican. Students who study at one of Dominican’s programs overseas and wish to have these courses count towards the Italian major must get prior written approval from the Italian discipline director.
