Health Sciences

No matter the current economic situation and health care reform, sick and injured people always will need care. What’s more, even healthy people need help from a health professional to stay that way.

Dominican University offers excellent preparation for careers in the health sciences. The strength of the Dominican University curriculum has led to partnerships with leaders in health career education at the Rush Oak Park Hospital, Rush University, and Midwestern University.

Dominican University offers a unique internship opportunity with Rush Oak Park Hospital. Under the direction of the medical staff, the student may explore many opportunities in the health care field, including firsthand observations of surgery and other medical procedures.

Preparation for health-related careers begins with a thorough grounding in basic science. Students take courses in key disciplines, including:
  • General biology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
Depending on their future academic plans, health sciences students may also take courses in:
  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Organic chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Biophysics
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
All of the health sciences cooperative programs have very specific requirements and time frames associated with them.

Successful completion of any of these programs requires careful planning and an organized, disciplined approach to education. If possible, students should choose their program and familiarize themselves with its requirements even before arriving at Dominican as a freshman.

Without careful planning, the programs’ tight schedules will prove overwhelming or even impossible to complete.

The department strongly urges all students who are considering a health sciences program to consult with the health careers advisor as soon as possible and regularly thereafter to ensure that progress is satisfactory.
