English As a Second Language Endorsement

Purpose

This non-degree program is designed to enable certified teachers to obtain the additional State of Illinois Approval needed to provide English As A Second Language (ESL) instruction.

Program for Those in Regular Education

This program is designed for teachers who hold Illinois certificates, i.e., Type 03 (elementary, K–9), Type 04 (early childhood education, birth–grade 3), or Type 09 (secondary, grades 6–12) who are:
1. Employed currently in education programs serving English As A Second Language students.
2. Preparing for or seeking employment as English As A Second Language teachers.

Requirements

A person may apply for the State of Illinois English As A Second Language Approval upon satisfactory completion of the prescribed core curriculum while maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0.

EDU 650 Theoretical Foundations of Teaching English As A Second Language (3)
EDU 651 Methods and Materials for Teaching English As A Second Language (3)
EDU 654 Assessment of English Language Learners (3)
EDU 655 Language and Culture (3)
EDU 656 Linguistics and Language Development (3)

A related elective in any of the above areas, e.g., EDU 653, EDU 652, EDU 661.
