Bilingual Endorsement

Purpose

This non-degree program is designed to enable certified teachers who have the language proficiency required to teach in bilingual education classrooms to add the Bilingual Approval to their current Illinois certificate, i.e., Type 03 (elementary, K–9), Type 04 (early childhood education, birth–grade 3), Type 09 (secondary, grades 6–12) or Type 10 (special education).

Program for Those in Regular Education

The Bilingual Approval program is designed for teachers who have State of Illinois Type 03, Type 04 or Type 09 certification and are:
1. Employed currently in bilingual education programs or
2. Preparing for or seeking employment as bilingual education teachers.

Requirements

A person may apply for the State of Illinois Bilingual Approval upon satisfactory completion of the prescribed core curriculum while maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0.

Core Curriculum for the Bilingual Approval Program

EDU 651 Methods and Materials for Teaching English As A Second Language (3)
EDU 652 Historical Foundations of Bilingual Education (3)
EDU 653 Methods and Materials for Teaching in Bilingual Education Programs (3)
EDU 654 Assessment of English Language Learners (3)
EDU 655 Language and Culture (3)

A related elective in any of the above areas, e.g., EDU 650, EDU 656, EDU 661.

Core Curriculum for the Bilingual Approval Program for Candidates Who Have Type 10 Special Education Certification

EDU 652 Historical Foundations of Bilingual Education (3)
EDU 653 Methods and Materials for Teaching in Bilingual Education Programs (3)
EDU 654 Assessment of English Language Learners (3)


Certified School Service Personnel

Individuals certified in guidance, school social work or school psychology may gain Bilingual Approval by taking EDU 654 Assessment for English Language Learners (3).

General Requirements

In addition to course work, candidates for Bilingual Approval must:
1. Complete 100 clock hours of bilingual field experience or have 3 months of teaching experience in a bilingual education program.
2. Submit Form 73–49, Request for approval as a bilingual or English As A Second Language teacher.
3. Complete successfully a language proficiency examination.
